Fairfield County is located in central Ohio, bordered by Licking County to the north, Perry County to the east, Hocking County to the south, and Franklin and Pickaway Counties to the west. As of the 2020 census, the population was 158,192. The county seat is Lancaster. Fairfield County is part of the Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county was named for the fair fields in the county. It was originally settled by European Americans in the late 18th century, mostly by migrants from Virginia and Pennsylvania. It was formed on January 20, 1803 from Franklin County. The county is home to several state parks, including Hocking Hills State Park and Clear Creek Metro Park.
