Van Wert County is located in northwest Ohio, and is bordered by Paulding County to the north, Putnam and Allen Counties to the east, Mercer and Auglaize Counties to the south, and the state of Indiana to the west. It is part of the Lima, Ohio metropolitan statistical area. The county seat is Van Wert, and the largest city is Van Wert. Van Wert County was established on February 12, 1820 from parts of Mercer and Paulding counties. The county was named for Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of Major John André, a British officer during the American Revolutionary War. According to the 2020 Census, the population of Van Wert County is 28,931 people. The economy of Van Wert County is based on agriculture and manufacturing. The county is home to a number of small businesses, including farms, factories, and retail stores.
