Lisbon is a village and the county seat of Columbiana County. It is part of the Salem micropolitan area, about 23 miles southwest of Youngstown. It was founded in 1803 by a Baptist minister and originally named New Lisbon after Lisbon, Portugal. It has a population of 2,597 as of 2020.
It has a rich and storied history that dates back to the early 19th century. It was a center of iron and whiskey production, and one of the largest towns on the Sandy and Beaver Canal. It had the first bank, insurance company, and newspaper in the county. It was also involved in the American Civil War, as the northernmost western town where Confederate general John Hunt Morgan surrendered after his raid into Ohio.
Lisbon is home to many historic buildings and residences that reflect its past, such as the Lisbon Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It also has a beautiful downtown that is the economic hub of the community, with shops, restaurants, and services. Lisbon is known for being the birthplace of the modern drinking straw, invented and patented by Marvin C. Stone in 1900.
It also has some cultural and sightseeing attractions for visitors and residents alike. It hosts an annual Johnny Appleseed Festival every September, which celebrates the legendary folk hero who planted apple trees across Ohio and other states. It also has a museum dedicated to his life and legacy, located in his former home. Lisbon also has a park named after Sadie Van Fossen, a local heroine who saved many lives during a flood in 1913. The park features a swimming pool, playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports facilities.
