Mantua is a small village in northern Portage County, along the Cuyahoga River. It has a population of 1,001 as of 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area and was founded in the 1840s by the Tappan family, who named it after a town in Italy they had visited. Mantua has three properties on the National Register of Historic Places: the Horace L. Hine House, the Mantua Station Brick Commercial District, and the William H. Crafts House. Some of the places of interest in Mantua include the John Johnson Farm, a historic site and farm museum, and the Headwaters Trail, a scenic bike path that follows an old railroad route. The largest employers in Mantua are mostly local businesses, such as Advanced Drainage Systems, a manufacturer of plastic pipes; Mantaline Corporation, a producer of rubber products; and Great Lakes Cheese Company, a cheese distributor.
