Mt Vernon is a small city in Knox County, with a population of about 16,000 people. It is known for its historic downtown district, which features many buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some of the places of interest in Mt Vernon include the Woodward Opera House, the oldest opera house in the country; the Knox County Historical Society Museum, which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the local history; and the Kokosing Gap Trail, a scenic bike path that follows an old railroad route.
