Newark is a city in Licking County and the county seat. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area and has a population of 49,934 as of 2020. Newark is known for its historic downtown and its ancient earthworks built by the Hopewell culture. Some of the attractions in Newark include:

  • The Newark Earthworks, a National Historic Landmark and a state park that preserves the largest complex of geometric earthen enclosures in the world. The earthworks were used for ceremonial and astronomical purposes by the Hopewell people more than 2,000 years ago.
  • The Licking County Courthouse, a historic building that dates back to 1876 and features a clock tower and a statue of Justice. The courthouse is located in the center of Newark's public square and hosts various events throughout the year.
  • The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology, a museum that showcases the history, art and technology of Newark and Licking County. The museum features interactive exhibits, a glass studio, a science lab and a children's area.
  • The Dawes Arboretum, a botanical garden that spans 1,800 acres and features more than 15,000 plants from around the world. The arboretum also has a Japanese garden, a bonsai collection, a cypress swamp and a wildlife observation tower.
