Scioto County is a county in the south central region of Ohio, along the Ohio River. It was founded on March 24, 1804, from Adams County and named after a Native American word for deer or deer-hunting. According to the 2020 census, the population of Scioto County was 74,008, with Portsmouth as its county seat. Some of the places of interest in Scioto County include Shawnee State Park, the largest state park in Ohio with over 88,000 acres of forested land, Wayne National Forest, which covers almost 12,000 acres in three townships in Scioto County, and Mound Park, which features ancient Native American earthworks. The largest employers in Scioto County are Southern Ohio Medical Center, Shawnee State University, and OSCO Industries.
