Woodsfield, is a village and the county seat of Monroe County, located 30 miles northeast of Marietta. According to the 2020 census, the population of Woodsfield was 2,360. Woodsfield was founded in 1813 as the seat of the newly formed Monroe County and was named after Archibald Woods. The village is known as "The Switzerland of Ohio" because of its scenic landscape and its Swiss and German heritage. Some of the places of interest in Woodsfield include the Monroe County Courthouse, which was built in 1905 and features a clock tower and a dome, the Monroe County Museum, which displays historical artifacts and exhibits related to the county's history, and the Monroe Arts Council, which promotes arts and culture in the community. The largest employers in Woodsfield are the Monroe County government, the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District, and the Woodsfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
